Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph - SSC935

Carrying the Speedtimer spirit of the 1960s and 70s into the present, the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer (ref. SSC935) is a proud solar chronograph with a pale blue dial that captures the clarity and sparkle of a Crystal Trophy. Under the light, its sunray finish brings the transparent blue to life, while black subdials and a black tachymeter bezel supply bold, sporty contrast. The seconds markers sit on the inner bezel ring to make room for large, bold indexes, and LumiBrite coats all twelve of them as well as the hour and minute hands for reading in low light.

Seiko's solar caliber V192 powers a 60-minute chronograph in 1/5-second increments, and its white chronograph seconds hand lines up with the white minute hand at 6 o'clock so timing is easy to follow. A 24-hour subdial, small seconds and a date display join a power reserve indicator that appears at the touch of a button, and a full charge keeps the watch running for approximately six months. A curved sapphire crystal, anti-reflective on its inner surface, tops the 41.4mm stainless steel case, which is water resistant to 100 meters and rides on a steel bracelet fastened by a three-fold push-button clasp.

Timepiece History

Seiko's story began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. The first watch to carry the Seiko name followed in 1924, and Seiko went on to introduce a long line of watchmaking firsts, including the Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch, on December 25, 1969. In 2024, Seiko celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Seiko brand.

The SSC935 is part of the Prospex Speedtimer series, inspired by Seiko's long tradition in sports timing. In the 1960s, Seiko built high-precision stopwatches around its innovative heart-shaped cam mechanism, including a 1/100-second stopwatch that served as an official timing device at the world sporting event held in Tokyo in 1964, and in 1969 Seiko introduced the Speedtimer with Caliber 6139, the first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch.
